John Scarffe, Nederland. A loud cheer rang out in the Nederland Middle/Senior High School Gymnasium as 32 graduating Nederland seniors of the Class of 2019 threw their mortar boards in the air. Principal Richard Elertson had just proclaimed the seniors as graduates at the Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 18, 2019.

To begin the graduation, the orchestra performed a prelude at 5 p.m., and then the Pomp and Circumstance began the Processional, led by the administration and faculty and followed by the graduates. Elertson welcomed the graduates, and then seniors Sasha Godsil and Scout Edmondson played guitars and sang, “Oh, What a World.”
Elertson presented the Friends of Nederland Award to Casey Henrikson, for someone who has always been there for you -- if you scraped your knee or needed a ride. She teaches you the true meaning of determination and has given many hours supporting Nederland students, faculty and staff.

Graduate Adam Figgins received the Senior Award for his natural curiosity, positive influence, including being the president of the National Honor Society, calm nature and thoughtful demeanor. He spent many hours after school and cares about learning the material.
Figgins and Megan Feely gave the Senior Speech, Stay Eager and Learn. They encouraged the graduates to focus on being a life-long learner. The class faced changing administration, floods and more, so this is an adaptive class.
The orchestra performed Bohemian Rhapsody, before the Commencement Address. Danielle Petrovic told the graduates that they will have to figure out the next chapter in their lives on their own, but she reminded them of their roots and the gift of being a rare Ned native. “You made good decisions and many bad ones,” she said.
“You will undoubtedly face challenges, but you will still have the Nederland administration and faculty for support,” Petrovic said. “You have your answers inside you.
“I do have the most confidence in you,” Petrovic said. “Remember that you have a community that loves you.”
Football Coach Aaron Jones told the graduates he has coached 99 Panther games on the field outside the school. Before every game, he would give the players a pep talk, and said, “We need to focus, compete and win.”
Tonight is his 100th pregame pep talk, and it’s the most important game, Jones said. You are about to embark on a journey, and great moments are made from great opportunities. “You will get knocked down, and you’d better be ready to get back up.
“You have been honored with the tools you need. You are mountain strong and mountain cool. When you walk out these doors tonight, there will be no turning back. What’s going to stop you from your version of success?
“What’s going to stop you from starting your own business, protecting our freedom, making your first million? Play your game and do it your way,” Jones said.
Following the Presentation of Graduates, Presentation of Diplomas and the Certification of graduates, including throwing the mortar boards in the air, those in the crowded gym watched a slide show of the graduates with baby pictures, senior photos and photos of accomplishments at the high school.

The 2019 Nederland High School Graduates are Edward Kenneth Abbottlane, Kevin Terrance Abbottlane, Carlos Philippe Eros Arieta Winsett, Anaya Soleil Arroya, Mattea Ruth Smith Beasley, Lance Paul Bell, Garret Wilson Ceurvost, Spencer Aero Chilcote, Jakob Marshal Duncan, Scout Peter Edmondson, Megan Skyler Feeley, Adam Ericson Figgins, Sasha Maria Godsil, Anna Faye Hastings, Avy Odessa Henrickson, Rhode Anthony Hessner, Taylor Andrew Hoffman, Tobiah Asher Kane, Mackenzie Taylor Kulp, Eileen Genevieve Lanthier, Rain Wolf Larrabee, Iain Kyle McClenon, Breegan Tyler McClish, William Hunter McNamara, Charlie Marco Melander, Logan Paul Michell, Adler Jackson Kuban Mueller, Wesley Michael Nation, Dakota Orren Pilarcik, Petra Ann Schmidtman, Noah Charles Sineni and Damon Robert Vigil.
