The Town of Nederland is seeking voter approval to raise sales taxes one quarter of one percent for

the purpose of road improvements at the April 3, 2018 elections. Multiple assessments of costs to repair

or replace the asphalt roads in town have proven to be cost prohibitive. Typical replacement costs can

be as much as $100,000 per tenth of a mile and Nederland has over 3 miles of paved roads.

Due to budgetary constraints, costs to maintain these roads have been deferred for many years.

Funds collected from this tax will be dedicated to road restoration and storm water management

efforts. Even though the projected annual revenue from this initiative represents a small fraction of

what is needed, Public Works is confident that through in-house collaboration and grant opportunities,

these funds will have a significant impact on improving roadways.

Several options have been considered for raising revenue for road improvements. With more

people visiting Nederland every year, a sales tax initiative seems like the best way for visitors to help

absorb the burden of the high cost of road repair on Nederland’s residents. Please consider voting for

this tax in April. Public Works will hold 2 public forums before the April election and is inviting residents

to learn more about the Department’s efforts. A Public Forum will be held on February 6, 2018 at the

Nederland Community Center from 7 – 9 p.m. and another will be announced at a later date.
