Included in the reports were two incidents of fires being started by improperly disposed of ashes. Ashes should be kept in a metal container with a lid until they are cold to the touch all the way to the bottom.

On October 3, 2016, a Nederland Police Department officer responded to a report of domestic violence. At the same time, a Boulder County deputy was called out for backup. When the Ned officer arrived, he spoke with the victim, who said he and his girlfriend are in the process of building a house and they had been arguing about a plumbing bill. He said he told his girlfriend the bill was going to be $800 and it turned out to be $5,000.

During the argument, the woman was sweeping the garage. She began to swing the broom at the man. He took it away and locked it in his truck. She left and then he went to their home. When he arrived, he told the woman he wanted the keys to three of his vehicles because he was leaving. She refused to give him the keys and when he left she grabbed him, pulling the neck of his shirt, and scratching his face and neck. As he tried to use his phone, she hit it from his hand and it fell under the truck. While he was under the truck she went into the garage, ripped her shirt, fell on the floor, and began screaming, "Stop beating an old lady."

When he tried to record the event, the woman grabbed another broom and started swinging at him, missing, but hitting the car hard enough that the paint from the broom stuck to the truck.

The victim said he believes the woman was off her meds and drinking. The woman did not want to talk about the incident, only about the financial issues. She alleged that the man hit her, but the story was inconsistent.

The officer arrested the woman for harassment and domestic violence. She was taken to the Boulder County Jail.

On October 7, 2016, a Nederland officer was sent to investigate a smoke report on Hwy. 119. When the officer arrived, he saw smoke coming from the inside of a garage and called the Nederland Fire Protection District to respond.

The officer and a sheriff's deputy saw flames at the south side of the garage. The fire had spread to the underbrush and was starting to burn nearby trees. Flames broke out the windows from the inside. The officer went to the neighbors' houses to inform them to be ready to evacuate if necessary. The NFPD hit the fire, knocking down the flames. The fire crew asked to speak to the officer. They told him that the woman who lived there had dumped ashes from her fireplace next to the garage. She said she had been doing this for a while and didn't think it was dangerous. She was given a summons for fourth degree arson.

On October 10, 2016, a local dispensary employee dropped off a wallet containing a passport at the NPD. There was no identification or address in the wallet. Later in the day, the person came to the police department to claim the wallet.

On October 10, 2016, a Ned officer responded to a reckless endangerment report. When he arrived, a woman told him she had been fired from her job and she went back to her campsite to tell her boyfriend. She told her boyfriend she was going to find another job but her boyfriend told her he was leaving town and they argued.

When the woman went to town she saw him in his truck and told him she never wanted to see him again and got her belongings out of the truck. He drove away while she was in the bed of the truck, and headed to Chipeta Park. When she got out of the bed of the truck, the suspect ran over the tips of her toes. He then allegedly pushed her when she tried to get a picture out of the cab.

A Boulder County Deputy placed the man into custody for questioning. He told them that he didn't want the woman to leave him because he was sick. She left anyway so he drove to town to talk with her. He said he drove away with her in the bed so they wouldn't cause a scene. The BCSO deputy took the man into custody and transported him to jail.

On October 9, 2016, a man reported that his license plate was stolen from his vehicle. No other information is available.

On October 18, 2016, a man approached an officer in a patrol vehicle and told him that someone had just beat up the officer's vehicle with a large stick. The officer walked around the back and saw that the rear passenger sidelight was broken out, the rear window on the same side was shattered and there were scratches on the rear of the vehicle. The suspect was described as in his 60’s, about 6'3" with a large gray beard. He was known to have lived in the area for several years.

The witness said the man came down the stairs striking the guard rail with a stick and then he walked to the patrol car and hit it. He appeared to be highly intoxicated at the time. The officers looked for the man but couldn't find him. They went into a local bar and were told that the man was not allowed in the bar, but he had come by and beaten on the door.

The officers went to another bar and learned that the suspect had been there, but he never talked to anyone. The officers checked surveillance tapes on the area and saw the man walking past the PD swinging a large stick.

On October 19, 2016, a supplement to the police report stated that because of mental health issues, the NPD is looking at other options for the suspect, such as the Restorative Justice Program.

On October 22, 2016, a Ned officer was sent to investigate a disturbance report. When he met the reporting party, she said her house had been trashed and she didn't know where her husband was. The officers cleared the house for intruders and found the husband in the bedroom. He said all the damaged items belonged to him. The officers found the woman a place to stay for the night and told them both to "sleep off the frustration."

On October 24, 2016, an officer received a phone call from a person who asked him to make a welfare check on a Nederland resident. The reporting party had been in contact with her via Facebook and learned that her ex-husband had been abusive.

The woman was wheelchair dependent. When the officers arrived, they saw a power wheelchair near the front door and a makeshift plywood ramp between the sidewalk and the parking lot. The woman was inside and opened the door for the officers. They saw a red mark above her lip on the left side, but she was fine otherwise. She wanted to know who had reported the information. She refused to answer any questions and the case was closed.

On October 26, 2016, a local business owner reported a suspicious email she had received about a reference she had given. She wanted the email documented for future reference.

On October 26, 2016, the NPD office received a report of a hit and run. The victim said someone had hit her car and she indicated a scratch on the rear bumper. The officer determined the scratch had been made with a sharp object that had sliced the plastic. It was an act of criminal mischief. The officer took a photo of the damage and cleared the scene.

On October 29, 2016, at around 3 a.m. an officer received a report of a structure fire. When the officer arrived, he saw a plume of smoke with an orange/red glow. He saw a shed and an outbuilding on fire with flames about 20 feet high. Three men stood by and watched the fire. The officer heard small explosions and discovered later that they were caused by propane canisters.

The three men said they were sleeping when the fire started and one of them woke up and saw the red light outside and then the fire. The men ran outside and tried throwing water on the fire with a five-gallon bucket, but the fire was too big and had spread to the garage. The NFPD firefighters arrived and put out the fire. The witness said that there was a compost pile on the northeast side of the chicken coop where they dump the ashes from the fireplace, and they had last dumped the ashes about two days previous.

On October 21, 2016, an officer received a call about a woman having difficulty with kidney failure. The woman was in pain and being held by a friend. The officer noticed a half empty bottle of vodka. She said she was having DT's. The officer learned she had been camping with a man who sexually threatened her. The man is a known narcotic user/seller who has been aggressive toward several people in town. She was taken to the hospital. The officer called the hospital ER to talk to the woman but she was not able to talk at that time.

On October 31, 2016, a man reported three forged checks on his bank account, transactions he did not complete. The victim said the forged checks began after he sent a check to a nursing home for his mother's monthly care. The Home reported that the check did not make it to them. It had fallen into the wrong hands and was used as a template to make fraudulent checks. The officer called the police department where the nursing home is located and was told that there had been mail thefts and vehicle trespasses in the area.

On November 1, 2016, a Ned officer investigated a report of graffiti on a concrete barrier using an expletive. The Nederland Public Works was notified. There are no suspects.

On November 1, 2016, a trespass report sent an officer to meet with a man who said his neighbor had been confronting him about the work he has been doing. He said the ex-husband of the neighbor had trespassed across his back yard.

The man showed the officers his back yard from an upper deck. The yard was freshly graded dirt, up to the edge of the hill. The officer realized that the man had complained two weeks previous regarding boulders that had been moved and made threats against the horses at that time.

The man said he was fed up with the neighbor and her ex-husband walking on his property, complaining about him damaging old trees and saying he poisoned the horses. He said before the house was built the neighbor had acted as if she owned the property. He showed the officer the survey pins. He said he wanted to be left alone and not deal with people trespassing.

When questioned, the woman said the work was being done illegally on a town right of way, and stated that the excavation had damaged the trees.  The officer said he would follow up with Public Works.  She wants no more trespassing on her property and wants the man to leave her horses alone.

On November 7, 2016, an officer talked to Public Works who said there was no issue with the work being done, but he was concerned about a chair that was placed on the property. PW will also remove the boulders so the resident can plow.
