On Tuesday, October 26, 2021, the Nederland Middle Senior High School Band and Orchestra met at the school theater for the 2021 Fall Concert.
The concert brought a good crowd which filled most of the seats. The sounds of tuning instruments and muffled chatter under masks filled the room.
Ms. Christine Mallery and Ms. Liz Evans directed the student musicians. The program began with the high school band playing a sea shanty called Saxes on the Seas, followed by the well-known Hit Me With Your Best Shot, arranged by Paul Murtha.
The High School Orchestra then performed Conquistador! brilliantly, and continued with Orange Jam and Duet Opus 22 No 1.
The seventh and eighth graders were then called to the stage and Mallery informed the crowd that the seventh graders were very excited to perform for the first time since the pandemic prevented it last year.
Mallery also informed the audience that the next piece, titled Viola Country centers on the viola players and that the rest of the group has gotten very good at listening to each other’s cues and watching her directions.
It was wonderful to once again hear music from the middle and high school musicians at Nederland Middle Senior High School. They have persevered. It is not easy to continue playing an instrument through a pandemic. The teachers and musicians deserve much credit for their accomplishments.
