Nederland Loquations perform at CMEA

Posted

On Friday, January 27, 2023, Nederland High School a capella group, The Loquations, had the honor of performing in Colorado Springs for the 2023 Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA) Clinic/Conference. One hundred and two choirs across the state of Colorado submitted auditions to be chosen as honor choir performers. As one of eight choirs in the state selected to be an honor choir performer, The Loquations are also one of two groups to represent the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD), along with the Fairview Chamber Orchestra, who performed on Friday, January 28.

Nederland High School Choir Director Elizabeth Evans received a call from Cynthia Eversole in the summer of 2022 with the news that the Loquations were selected as an “Honor Performing Group.” Immediately, she started gathering dozens of potential pieces for the group to sing at the conference, and the group chose their favorites to perform. Evans knew she did not want her program to focus on COVID and its effects and that it had to focus on the theme of this year’s conference, Strengthening Connections.

In the end, the group chose five songs to perform. These songs included “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” originally by Bob Dylan and arranged by Adam Podd; “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli; “We Remember Them” with music by Susan LaBarr and text by Sylvan Kamens and Rabbi Jack Reimer; “Breathe” by Coleman Peterson; and “Connected” by Brian Tate. Skylar Abookire featured as the soloist for “Breathe,” and Aya Pelkhum-Donahue featured as an accompanist for “We Remember Them.”

In the BVSD program for the CMEA Conference, Evans says, “Through participation in music, being active in important social movements, taking time to attend to our planet, remembering those we lost and taking time to reflect and breathe collectively we can connect to one another. Through that connection we can begin to breathe together in the song, and stay connected through our shared dissonances and find resolution.”
