NEDERLAND — Snow is a commodity up here in the mountains. IT partially fuels the local economy and greatly increases the vibes of our postcard-perfect ski town. So on Friday, December 5, when there was finally snow on the ground, it served to accentuate one of Nederland’s most unique events.
The Nederland Holiday Lighting Ceremony is a one-of-a-kind, spirited celebration, an annual tradition made more special by the community, who have endured so much in recent months.
“It was a rough morning on October 9,” Mayor Billy Giblin said to the crowd, referencing the devastating Lakeview Fire. “But a lot of things have happened since then to show what a strong community we are and how connected we are, through happy times and hard times.”
Town of Nederland employees have been toiling like elves in a toy factory, dressing the main stretch of town with lights and decorations. The Friday night event launches the spread of holiday cheer throughout the town for the season.
The Cavalry Chapel Choir sang amongst the backdrop of lightly falling snowflakes, their voices wrapping around the crowd like a blanket as they sipped on cocoa and munched on sweet treats provided by Town staff.
“Thank you all for being a part of our amazing community,” Giblin said. “I love that we get to raise our kids here and experience days-in-the-life here. Nederland is a magical place.”
The crowd counted down together, and burst with cheer as Nederland suddenly lit up with the colorful display of holiday joy. The jubilance was then carried by the community and shared with everyone down East 1st Street.
Santa and Mrs. Claus rode in their sleigh along with local kids, led by that famous guest who makes every event that much more extraordinary: Murray the Yak.
Locals and tourists, dining or shopping at Nederland’s downtown, came running out to the street to greet Murray and the crowd. Some even joined in with the caroling that continued to march all the way down to Ned General.
A very special thanks to the dedicated Nederland Town staff for working hard to make the 2025 Holiday Lighting Ceremony such a memorable experience, and for bringing the local community some joyful illumination over the next several weeks. May the lights provide some much-needed healing this season.
