On Sunday, September 26, 2021, the Nederland Police Department (NPD) and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) hosted a kids fishin’ derby. Several local families participated, including about 50 kids. As well as many folks from out-of-town that happened upon the event at Chipeta Park, while visiting during a weekend of heavy leaf peepin’ traffic.
Most of the kids caught at least one fish and several caught two or more. Several were unsure about giving it a try or how it would all work out, but everyone had a good time and learned something during the event.
There were two CPW officers, one CPW intern and Marshal Larry Johns to help the kids and families.
Poles, bait, instruction, hook tying, fish removal and fish cleaning was provided to all who needed it. Only one family kept the fish. Johns remarked, “I think several wanted to but had no idea what to do with them.”
NPD provided the bait, hooks, fish bags, drinks, snacks, and a hand washing station. CPW provided poles, hooks, 250 Rainbow trout, and guidance. About 20 poles were given away to kids. Johns further states, “There should be plenty of fish left in the pond for the next couple weeks.”
CPW Officer Peterson declared, “The event went great and CPW wants to hold it again next year, around the same time or maybe a week later.”
