NEDERLAND — “And they said libraries were dead!” Nederland Community Library Director Elektra Greer quipped while thanking those involved in the library’s efforts, to general applause from the assembled crowd.
It’s Saturday, February 21, and dozens of people have arrived at the library after hours as attendees of an anniversary gala. The gala marks 25 years of the library’s operation.
The gala embraced the library’s history while also looking toward its future. Along with Greer, speakers who celebrated the library’s accomplishments and memories over the last quarter-century included Susan Kelly, president of the nonprofit Nederland Community Library Foundation; Scarlet Ponton de Dutton, president of the library's Board of Directors; and Shayna Anne Beckham-Starr, assistant librarian.
The gala also celebrated the inception of the Nederland Poet Laureate (NPL) program, with poems by the first NPL, Karen Auvinen, passed out to attendees. Auvinen also ready from "The Annunciation of Fire," a piece she created after the devastation of the Lakeview Fire that burned down the Caribou Village Shopping Center in October 2025.
"Fire speaks in tongues," she said, "its voice a gospel, an annunciation."
Refreshments—including appetizers, sweet treats, and wine tastings—were available. Throughout the night, attendees could place bids in a silent auction for a collection of some of the library’s rare books. Local band Mountain ReVerb performed.
A Town Board resolution created the library in October 2000. It first opened in April 2001.
The Nederland Community Library has endured thanks to the support and passion of its community, and with more events and milestones ahead.
