Nederland Community Center updates

Operations are running smoothly at the Community Center and there is fun to be had! Dance, exercise and martial arts classes, volleyball, pickleball are all available for public participation in addition to the events and activities mentioned in this report. We are currently exploring the possibility of whether the gymnasium floor can sustain roller skating activity.

Fitness Equipment has been inspected and is being repaired while other pieces are marked for replacement, though we continue to utilize these older units as long as they are in safe functioning condition. Other compliance inspections within the facility are also underway.

Wild Bear will present the Backcountry Film Festival at the Backdoor Theater on Saturday March 5. Doors open at 5 p.m. for silent auction and music by the NoGo Gilbillies and the Dynamite Shack will be onsite for food. Movie screenings start at 7 p.m. and the proceeds benefit Wild Bear and Nederland PTA. The following day, Sunday March 6, BDT will host a special showing of the 1998 film, The Big Lebowski, to celebrate The Day of the Dude. The event is sponsored by Chelsey LeForge. https://thebackdoortheatre.org/event/the-biglebowski rated-r/

There will be no Nederland Area Seniors (NAS) sponsored Pancake Breakfast the Saturday morning of Frozen Dead Guy Days this year. A new Art Show will be hung on March 5. A reception has not yet been scheduled due to Covid concerns, but will be forthcoming, date TBD. Mountain Forum for Peace has committed to holding their annual Yard Sale event in the traditional weekend, June 3 to 5, which aligns with Town clean-up. Drop off days will be May 28 to June 1, no drop off on Memorial Day, a Town holiday.

All of the activities and events noted above, as well as many not mentioned, are reasons NCC staff is hopeful and confident the Tabor Ballot Issue on the Community Center sales tax extension will be approved by the Nederland voters on April 5. We believe the Community Center is a necessary and an essential part of our Town and is valued by the citizens.

Finally, I would like to recognize our building custodian, Eman, for his compassion and response to a recent wildlife situation. Many of you have never met Eman since he works off hours to clean and sanitize the facility. Sunday January 23, he was coming up the backstairs to the dumpster when he came across a Pygmy Owl laying on the ground, unable to fly, at the top of the back stairs. He got a box from recycling and took the owl to the Birds of Prey Sanctuary in Broomfield where it will be rehabilitated. This response is representative of the quality employees that serve our Town on the Community Center staff and throughout other departments.
