The Nederland High School boys’ basketball team is nearing the end of an exciting and challenging season by winning an important game and coming together as a team. At last Wednesday’s home game, they won 40-23 over Dawson, with four 3-pointers scored by Ricky Fortunato and more than 20 points made by Max Godsil.

Athletic Director Sean DePaula said that their team chemistry really shone through at the game, and that he believes the young team will soon hit its stride.

Considering their recent success, it is hard to believe that their season was actually a very challenging one. “We are a very young team, and we had a slow start,” said Coach Stephen Timmins. With a difficult schedule, it was an especially hard blow when the team contracted COVID in December and had to cancel practice for weeks. This gave them no time to prepare for the rescheduled games or develop as a team.

“We stuck with it, though.” said Dean Howell, a freshman on the team.

With what DePaula calls “fight and tenacity,” they’ve gotten back on track, and Coach Timmins is optimistic. The tough preseason schedule will prepare us for an even tougher region play,” he said. “Being able to play together on both the offensive and defensive end will be important to make this a successful season.”

Coach Timmins and

DePaula agree that another advantage to the team is its two seniors, Charlie Rawlins and Logan Delong. “They’ve been rising to the occasion,” said DePaula. “Their leadership on and off the court is a significant asset to our overall, very young team, which is filled primarily with underclassmen.”

The recent success has given the team hope for a thrilling finale for this season.

“This year was my first ever season of basketball.” says Howell. “I was definitely nervous, but the guys on our team made me feel confident. In our first game, I was starting as a freshman, and I have continued to get better ever since. I’m thankful for our coach, and our teammates and that we get to go out on the court and do something we love even through all of the adversity.”
