The Nederland Area Historical Society (NAHS) hosted a lively and successful silent auction and fundraiser on Friday, November 3, 2023, at Hub Ned in Nederland. Organized by Rebecca Wickre, the event drew a crowd of over 60 people, all gathered to support the noble cause championed by the NAHS.
The mission of the Nederland Area Historical Society is as inspiring as it is vital - to collect, preserve, and exhibit documents, artifacts, and other records of Nederland area history for the education and enjoyment of the public. Under the dedicated leadership of current chair Jessie Ansari, the society’s efforts have been monumental. From keeping the steam shovel running, an endeavor demanding extensive maintenance, to managing the Gillaspie House Museum and digitizing historical photos, the NAHS has been a cornerstone in preserving the rich heritage of Nederland.
Their work doesn’t stop there. The society is actively involved in preserving the Nederland Cemetery and rehabilitating the Caribou Center up Caribou Road, demonstrating their commitment to honoring the area’s past and shaping its future.
The fundraiser featured an array of enticing items donated by local businesses and artists, highlighting the community’s generous spirit. The event was designed to be accessible to everyone, with items starting at just $25, allowing attendees to contribute meaningfully to the cause. Over 150 items were donated, ranging from horse-drawn carriage rides and coffee cups to wine and framed photo prints of the Nederland Cemetery.
The evening was made even more enjoyable by the presence of free drinks and food, including wine, beer, lemonade, and charcuterie boxes catering to various dietary preferences. The event’s bar sponsors, including Cindy Justice, Rick Blumenthal, Justine Tompkins, Jack Folz, Jim and Cindy Bartlett, and Salto Coffee, added to the vibrant atmosphere.
Tintype photography, provided by the talented Tyler Tomasello, captured the essence of the evening. Tomasello’s expertise in the historic photographic process added an authentic touch to the event, reflecting the society’s dedication to preserving the past.
At the end of the auction, Rebecca Wickre, the event organizer, announced the winners and facilitated smooth payment transactions through convenient methods like Venmo and credit card. Michele and Dan Martin were among the fortunate winners, securing the “Honey Pot” beethemed bundle and a Busey Brews gift card with sunglasses.
As attendees left the venue with smiles on their faces, clutching their winnings, they carried with them the satisfaction of supporting a significant cause. The NAHS’s efforts, coupled with the community’s unwavering support, ensure that Nederland’s rich history continues to be celebrated and preserved for generations to come.
