On Friday, December 6, 2024, in the blue and violet haze of sunset, the community gathered in the cold in front of Nederland Town Hall to witness an event one resident said was “like a Hallmark movie moment.”
The traditional Holiday Lighting Ceremony, thanks to the Herculean efforts of Town staff and of Nederland’s Parks Department, succeeded this year in delivering a cozy and wholesome evening of cocoa, caroling, and Christmas lights.
The Cavalry Chapel Choir inspired Nederland residents to join in the caroling and to send infectious holiday cheer echoing throughout the Visitors Center parking lot and beyond.
As the classic songs warmed hearts, many gathered around a firepit to warm their hands, while children ran excitedly about, waiting for their turn to take a ride with Murray the Yak.
Town Administrator Jonathan Cain remarked to The Mountain-Ear that this was his first event with Murray, and, in his speech to those gathered, expressed his joy of being able to work for a place as special and unique as Nederland.
After Cain’s heartfelt words, he led the crowd in a countdown, resulting in that magical moment when Town Hall burst with light, including a tree made of strands of colorful lights, set up right in front for all to enjoy during the holidays.
Adults smiled as the multi-colored illuminated bouquet triggered their nostalgia; and children, filled with limitless joy (and sugar), cheered excitedly, with lights twinkling in their eyes.
But it wasn’t just the lights (and sugar) that had kids excited, for Santa and Mrs. Claus were there as well. visiting with the crowd amid the glow of electric holiday spirit. The Clauses then got into their sleigh, pulled by Murray, and led the townspeople through the streets of Nederland to spread the love of the season with some classic caroling.
The 2024 Nederland Holiday Lighting Ceremony was made possible by the hard work of dedicated Town staff, and was made all the more special thanks to the collaborative efforts of those who organized the event, and those from this unique community who attended.
