It was the festival scene that brought Ryan Blackwell to Nederland. These big events didn’t just bring tourists and tax revenue, they brought some amazing musicians over the years, perpetuating Nederland’s reputation as a haven for musical expression and creativity. Blackwell knew that Nederland was the ideal location for his dream job, owning his own record store; and four years ago in March, Blackwell first opened Boogie Records.
“Saturday, March 25, which is coincidentally the same weekend as the Nederdays festival, we’re going to celebrate our fourth anniversary with a one-day sale, 20% off everything in the store,” Blackwell told The Mountain-Ear. “That means stereo equipment, new vinyl, used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, everything.”
Boogie Records is Nederland’s premier record store, providing the music-loving community with thousands upon thousands of records and CDs featuring artists that have either recorded here at the Caribou Ranch recording studio years ago, or have played, and still play, at Nederland’s different venues. Boogie Records is a home for folk and country music, and classic pop from the 60s and 70s, and most of all, Boogie Records is a place for rock and roll.
Albums and posters from Queens of the Stone Age, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard decorate the walls, and there’s always something rocking playing on the stereo or on the vintage restored jukebox. Customers can spend endless hours looking at stacks of records, walls of CDs, and shelves full of DVDs, while BB, Boogie Records’ unofficial mascot, runs and barks around the store, adorably pestering patrons for pets and playtime.
“BB gets most of the compliments… and by association I do as well,” Blackwell jokes, as he talks about how the last four years operating a store in Nederland has been an amazingly positive experience.
“I’ve got a long list of really odd stories I can share,” Blackwell starts with a laugh, “I’ve met some of the most interesting people from all over the country all over the world, I could write a book!”
“I’ve met some really cool people and have made some great friends through this store and I hope for that to continue. It’s been quite an education and a real eye-opening experience being Nederland’s record store, and four years in I’m still having an absolute blast.”
Blackwell first opened Boogie Records on East 1st Street in March, 2019, and was excited to be a part of Nederland and its music scene. Boogie Records survived the pandemic and then moved locations to 150 North Jefferson Street, where his operating space and his customer traffic nearly doubled. In 2023, Boogie Records will be expanding again by knocking down a wall and taking over the nearly 500 square foot retail space right next door.
“An architect came in and mapped out the new floor plan and that’s being used to submit the application for the permit needed to take out the wall and expand, and I can’t wait!”
“I’m envisioning having at least a couple bigger and more comfortable listening stations and having room for more turntables, receivers, and speakers. Stereo equipment is probably going to be the main emphasis, but I also want to start selling pint glasses and some laser etched wood coasters and other rock merchandise and memorabilia. I would love to have a wall of lava lamps!” Blackwell said, excited by the prospect and possibilities of being able to provide his customers with more.
It’s a special kind of coincidence that Boogie Records will celebrate its fourth anniversary on the same weekend as Nederdays, a new event aimed at celebrating Nederland and its local businesses, artists, and artisans. For Blackwell it was kismet that he would be a part of Nederdays, as Boogie Records itself is also a celebration of Nederland and its love for music.
“The joy people get from flipping through records, it’s almost always a positive experience, it’s why I love being here, why I’ll always love being here.”
“One of my favorite aspects of the job is when people bring me records. It might be a crate of 50, it might be a collection of 500; I’ve bought a couple of collections that have been 1,000 plus records! I have found some absolute gems, some unicorn records that I’ll never see again have come through this door.”
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, Boogie Records, in addition to giving customers 20% off everything in the store, will also be raffling off some T-shirts, hoodies, stickers and other merchandise. There will also be baked sweets and goodies from Natalie Duplessy of Peace, Love, and Cake available at the store, as well as a custom cake being raffled off to a lucky customer.
Boogie Records has an unbeatable inventory of some classic and “holy grail” records for a music lover of any genre. Right now all used vinyl is “Buy 3, Get 1 Free”, and all CDs and DVDs are “$3 Each, or 4 for $10”.
Boogie Records is located at 150 N. Jefferson Street, Unit D, Nederland. You can find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/BoogieRecordsNederland or give them a call at 303-258-3081.
