The 2022 Nederland Thanksgiving Potluck will continue the more than 25-year tradition of a communal meal provided by the selfless efforts of local sponsors, volunteers, and residents across the Peak to Peak region. All the holiday favorites, from mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy are expected to be present on Sunday, November 13 at the Nederland Community Center.

None of the expected Thanksgiving side dishes would be complete without the turkey main course, with over 40 ten-to-twelve-pound turkeys (at an estimated $1.75 per pound) being provided by event sponsors B&F Mountain Market, owner of Peak Wine and Spirits Karen Fletcher, Zack Scott Homestead Realty, and Mark Stringfellow, and prepared by several volunteers.

Attendees are asked to BYOD (Bring Your Own Dishes) to the special “zero waste” event and help fill out the potluck table with their own personal holiday staples and secret family recipes. The event is free and open to all, though there is a suggested donation of $5 per person, from those who can afford to give, to help towards the cost of the event.

The Nederland Thanksgiving Potluck has been a tradition since before 1994, celebrating Nederland’s spirit with a meal “provided by the community for the community.” This year’s event is organized, led, and run by event coordinator Danielle Dennis, volunteer coordinator Michelle LaPointe, and kitchen coordinator Nate James, and is being held at the Nederland Community Center at 750 North Highway 72 in Nederland.

James took over kitchen duties for the event in 2017, and has volunteered every year that the event has been held since 2013.

“It’s truly a community event. All the vegans in town have their own table; there’s a vegetarian table as well.” James explained to The Mountain-Ear that the community coming to show off their culinary skills is one of his favorite aspects of the event. “The only downside is that because I’m always in the kitchen I end up missing out on most of the desserts,” James joked.

LaPointe has been volunteering for the Nederland Thanksgiving Potluck since 2017 and excitedly explained to The Mountain-Ear many of what attendees can expect at the event this year.

“There will be live music from several local acts that we’ve featured in the past; Brittney Wagner will be performing this year,” LaPointe said. “And Heather Taylor-Lande will have an arts table for the kids.” LaPointe also noted that the Nederland Fire Department will also be hosting their own table featuring famous fireman’s chili.

These event organizers (aka Team Turkey) are ecstatic to again bring the Thanksgiving Potluck event to the people and to highlight the magic of giving. Team Turkey urges attendees to bring their favorite dishes that, to them, no Thanksgiving can be without, and to share that feeling of warmth and comfort with others, strangers and friends alike.

This year’s event is sponsored by local businesses Ace Hardware, Backcountry Pizza, B&F Mountain Market, Crosscut Pizzeria, Keep Magnolia Clean, Mountain Peoples Co-op, Nederland Food Pantry, Nederland Fire Department, Nederland Presbyterian Church, New Moon Bakery, Salto Coffee, Train Cars, and Zack Scott Homestead Realty, as well as by local community members Karen Fletcher, Mark Stringfellow, and Heather Taylor-Lande.

The 2022 Nederland Thanksgiving Potluck will be held at the Nederland Community Center at 750 North Highway 72 on Sunday, November 13, 2022 from 12 to 3 p.m.
