On Monday, TEENS, Inc.’s Mountain Coalition for Youth and the Town of Nederland hosted a community meeting on safety at the skatepark. The Nathan Lazarus Skate Park opened in May 2009 in a dedication ceremony attended by professional skateboarder Tony Hawk whose foundation contributed $75,000 to the construction of the skate park.
The park is named after Nathan Lazarus who helped Tony Hawk win a $175,000 prize for his foundation in the game show “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” When he won, he promised to open a skate park in Nathan’s name. A grassroots effort was already underway in Nederland to secure funding for a skate park and when organizers were offered additional funds if they named the park after Nathan, they agreed. The total cost for the construction of the park, not including the land donated by the Town of Nederland was $500,000.
The skate park is a beloved park in our community, managed and supported by the Town of Nederland Parks & Recreation Department. As the warm weather arrives and attendance at the skate park increases, partner organizations want to remind the public of some important rules and guidelines at the park.
• Please no bikes or scooters at the park. Due to our cold winters, a special type of concrete was used to build the skatepark. This concrete is a “softer concrete” and bikes and scooters can cause damage to the concrete due to the metal edging that creates divots on the surface of the concrete.
• The skate park is a “use at your own risk” and there is no adult supervision at the park. -Children under the age of 12 must have a parent with them at all times.
• The skate park is open from dawn to dusk each day.
• No glass bottles are allowed in the park. Additionally, no alcohol or smoking/vaping is allowed at the park.
• Skaters are strongly encouraged to wear pads and helmets while skating.
• In case of an emergency, a 911 call box is located on TEENS, Inc.’s building by the doors connected to the park.
Thank you to all who help keep our Skatepark a safe and valuable asset in our community.
