Nederland Area Seniors (NAS), or Mountain Peak Life, is a local nonprofit organization serving active older mountain adults with various services, including weekly lunches. Its newest project is a Senior Lounge.
The lounge was a vision of NAS as a space for the community to gather and socialize. Aside from food, the space also welcomes games and wellness. “We were fortunate to have been invited to submit a proposal to Frasier Seniors for Seniors for funding opportunities,” NAS Director Reba Mitchell shares.
NAS was awarded $12,000 towards its vision of the Senior Lounge. The lounge space has a varied history, including once used for home economics when the building was a school and as a multi-use room for The Backdoor Theatre.
The seniors took over the lease in October 2023, maintaining a collaborative partnership with The Backdoor Theatre. Upgrades and repairs to the lounge include sinks and painting. Frasier Meadows donated the tables and chairs. The lounge also has a ping-pong table and games.
With the help of Balance Plumbing and local chef Patricia Graves, who caters many of NAS’s events, the Senior Lounge has taken on a new, purposeful life. Most upgrades to the space are complete.
Mitchell says NAS will continue to pursue funding into the next fiscal year to enhance the lounge and increase its program offerings. Wellness programs in the lounge include weekly chair yoga before lunches on Wednesdays.
Another program is the monthly Purple Art program run by Bohemia. Mitchell shares, “We are also sponsoring Foot Care, which traditionally has been run by Debbie Neal and is currently being taken over by Tammy under Debbie’s guidance and care.”
Mitchell continues, “Our strategic agency goal is to increase the ability of older adults in the Peak to Peak mountain region to comfortably age in place by reducing rural isolation and depression through physical, nutritional, cognitive, and social stimuli and active community connection.”
NAS’s long-term goals include improved or maintained health outcomes, increased community connection and reduced isolation.
