Ned parents meet with district leadership

Posted

Sara Sandstrom-Kobi, Nederland. Nederland parents who are part of the group Nederland Community for Educational Excellence (NCFEE) met with BVSD Area Superintendent Sam Messier. NCFEE is a local advocacy group that strives to have high quality education in Nederland schools.

Northwest Learning Network Area Superintendent Sam Messier came to the meeting to discuss BVSD’s reorganization of the central office, successes from the year, what needs to be the focus for next year and an update on the partnership with Front Range Community College.

Boulder Valley School District is going through a reorganization. All schools in the district are being put in one of three learning networks based on geography. Still one unified district, however one area superintendent and one executive director along with a team of directors will focus on 16 schools. All BVSD mountain schools are in the Northwest Learning Network. The mascot for this network is the Golden Moose, partly inspired by the moose that visit Nederland schools.

Knowing that climate and culture in the schools is a concern, Ms. Messier asked the group to discuss and come up with ideas relating to the following questions: When it comes to school climate and culture what are the responsibilities of the parents? What are the responsibilities of the school staff? What are the responsibilities of the district staff? What are the responsibilities of the community?

Thoughtful ideas were shared and discussed. Middle High School Principal Rick Elertson spoke passionately about the fact that we have an attrition problem and we need to positively promote ourselves. We need to communicate with the community and support each other. We can all do better to help the kids in our community.

Ms. Messier has been coming to these meetings all year and listens intently to concerns and shows that she cares about Nederland schools. This group of parents has worked hard to reach out to BVSD leadership in an organized and respectful manner. With the support of BVSD addressing our schools’ unique needs and parents coming together, we are on the right path for our kids.
