Farmers markets or open air markets have been an integral part of human history. They play an economic role in local economics and connect rural and urban communities.
Nederland’s Farmers Market started in 2016 and according to Nederland Farmers Market’s Manager Melody Baumhover there were seven tents at that first event. Now in the 2021 season they are averaging 30 vendors at each market. The growth and interest in having a farmers market in Nederland has been phenomenal.
When you visit the market you will see colorful hand carved wooden toys, pottery and jewelry. You can smell baked goods and fresh produce. You can hear local musicians. Each market has special musical guests playing.
There is a variety of goods to purchase at the Nederland Farmers Market. There is a vendor who cans her own tasty pickles and one who sells milk, cheese and yogurt. You can purchase gluten-free Swedish style breads. There is a catering vendor who sells soups and sandwiches. You can buy bagels and cookies. There are all sorts of fresh vegetables to purchase that taste oh, so good! Please, note that not every vendor attends every market.
In the last few decades farmers markets have become increasingly more popular in the United States again. The fresh fantastic tasting produce is likely one of the top reasons.
In the last several years there has become a more conscious effort to know where our food comes from. A farmers market brings more local food to consumers. That means that the food does not have to travel as far. Packaging is less. Sellers and consumers do not have to travel as far. The carbon footprint is reduced. That creates a more sustainable planet and a more sustainable future.
Farmers markets support the local economy and help to preserve farmland and family businesses. The produce sold at these markets connect us with the seasons. Which in turn connects us more to the earth.
In a town the size of Nederland, which is in a mountainous geographic area, the Nederland Farmers Market builds community. It is a place to gather. Cities, towns and villages build plazas, squares, parks and walking spaces so people have a place to interact. The farmers market has helped do that for Nederland.
There are still plenty of markets to attend in Nederland. Come and enjoy the music, the fresh produce, the food, the variety of goods and services and the camaraderie with the community.
Nederland’s Farmers Market is held every second and fourth Sunday beginning in May. The last market of the season is the very popular Harvest Market which occurs the first Sunday of October.
You can find more information about the Nederland Farmers Market at www.nederlandfarmersmarket.org. The market is located at 85 E. 1st Street in Nederland.
