Seven Nederland High School (NHS) students ran for the Panthers Cross Country team this year. Some of the runners have been on the team for multiple years, even every year they have been in high school, but this is their coach’s first year at NHS.

Gavin Coombs moved to Nederland from North Carolina with his family a few years ago and he is sharing his years of experience as a professional trail runner with the cross country team.

Coach Coombs grew up in Connecticut and started running when he was in third grade. He ran in high school, college and that led to a professional career. Fifty mile races, fifty kilometer races, marathons, and even bike races...he has a wealth of knowledge to impart on those that he now coaches.

Coach Coombs says that the team works well together, they get along. His goals this season is to see improvement and progression from each runner and to have fun. His goals are being met.

He has been very impressed with the three senior girls on the team. Coach Coombs says that they are strong, natural leaders. They are a great example for the team as they are strong, consistent runners and work hard. He has also been appreciative of their experience on the courses. As a first year coach in Boulder Valley School District the seniors are helping him learn what the courses are like.

The cross country team has run races in Broomfield, Lyons, Firestone, and Meade. They have a race in Northglenn coming up and the League Cross Country Meet at the Johnstown Reservoir on October 14.

Coach Coombs says the team is at their best when they run in the morning. It is cooler. It has been pretty hot at some of the races and that is often a challenge for Nederland kids.

It has been a great season for the Panthers Cross Country team and Coach Coombs is proud of their accomplishments. He hopes to continue to coach and help build the program in years to come.

This year the team consisted of:

Seniors: Eirwen McClish, Takira Weise, Ivy Brundege

Juniors: Noah Turner, Lucas Schalz

Sophomore: Trinity LeBlanc

Freshman: Lukey Mahorski
