The Nederland High School Boys’ Soccer Team is loaded with players with both experience and talent. They have proven their teamwork and skill already by winning two of the three games they have played so far.

The goal is being guarded again this year by Eli Weiner. Opponents are scoring few goals. Weiner is a junior this year, and he’s demonstrating his experience as the goalie.

Soccer is, of course, a team sport, and this team is playing like a team. It is difficult to highlight just a few players, because so many are playing great soccer. However, it is hard to ignore the leadership and abilities of senior Oskar Nunemacher. With his hockey and soccer skills, he handles the ball with precision and grace. Junior Maddox Gioia has a dynamite kick, and junior Cedar Shupe, along with the other players, plays solid and exciting soccer each game.

The Panthers are being coached again this season by Luis Gonzalez. He says, “I know that every year we are improving, and nothing is easy. But I have plenty of confidence in how we will do.”

Coach Gonzalez adds, “The team believes in what they are doing. This team has great potential.”

Gonzalez says that the more experienced players are doing a great job helping the new and younger players on the team. That speaks to Gonzalez’s vision for Nederland soccer. He understands the games this season, but also those players who will be playing more in the near future. His passion inspires his players.

Nederland’s next home soccer game is September 20, at 4 p.m., when they play Twin Peaks. Nederland High School’s volleyball teams (junior varsity and varsity) will also be playing Twin Peaks starting at 4 p.m. in the gymnasium.
