Nederland
Nederland Community Presbyterian Church, otherwise referred to as Ned Pres, welcomes area youth in middle and senior high school to participate in a Dinner and a Movie Youth Series and Discussion Group. The first session will be held Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 4 - 6 p.m. at the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church located at 210 N. Jefferson Street, on the Peak to Peak Highway just west of the Mining Museum.
At each gathering youth will watch a movie followed by a group discussion of the life lessons that can be gleaned from the movie.
The first gathering will feature the movie Les Misérables (1998, PG-13, starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Russell Crowe) based on Victor Hugo's classic novel. Volunteer leaders will facilitate a discussion of the movie, followed by a dinner of pizza, salad, and dessert.
There is no fee to attend and all are welcome. Group leaders are Cinda Kochen a retired special educator and a finalist for BVSD's Impact in Education Reward, along with Lynne Bulger, Ned Pres Elder, mother and registered nurse and Girl Scout troop volunteer, as well as retired educator and outdoor education teacher, John Records.
Ned Pres minister, Reverend Zachary Hancock, states, "Much of the world's great literature is inspired by the stories and great truths found in scripture. Certainly, Les Mis is one such story and is the first in what we hope is a series of meaningful films to engage that part of us that is too often neglected: spirit. Emily Dickinson said, 'Tell all the truth but tell it slant.' Meaning, tell the truth but tell it from a different angle. We hope to offer films that do just this."
If you know any Nederland and surrounding area youth who love films and would like to explore them with us please invite them along.
