On Sunday, September 18 kids from around Nederland met in the Nederland Community Presbyterian Church garden to decorate their bikes to get ready for the church’s Kid’s Bike Parade. When all of the crepe paper wraps and streamers and American flags were affixed to the bikes, the group, led by Ned Pres Minister Zach Hancock, embarked on a bike “parade” through the business districts and Old Town sections of Nederland.
Nederland resident Gavin Coombs helped organize the event and church volunteers, donning fluorescent safety vests, provided crossing guards at the traffic intersections along the route.
Following the parade, the kids and their parents enjoyed traditional games including a sack race, three- legged race and a water balloon toss. The event ended with pizza, lemonade and homemade cookies for all.
“I’m an avid cyclist and thought this would be fun for the kids and a great way for me to become acquainted with more of the families in town since I am new to my position at the church,” Hancock said. “Our church is very family-friendly and provides a children’s message each week, along with Sunday school. We had a lot of fun and we hope to make this an annual event.”
