Moose wandering through aspens with books, a dragon flying while reading, squirrels, owls, flowers and more adorn the walls of the Nederland Community Library. Local area children and teens were recently encouraged to submit original artwork for a new library card design contest.

The judges, three local artists, had an extremely difficult time choosing winners! “They’re all really amazing,” said long-time local artist Annie Thayer, who runs Art at the Center at the Nederland Community Center.

“They’re all really very cool,” said Ande Hammers, artist at Nederland High School, whose entry won the last Design-a-Library-Card Art Contest. “I love the 3D effect with the paint layers and the glitter,” she said, reviewing one of the many entries. Ande has been focusing her creative energies towards performing arts recently, but returned to the Library as one of the judges for this year’s contest.

“It was incredibly difficult to choose,” said Greg Marquez, the third judge, whose mural art you can see on the side of the Nederland Feed Store.

The three judges spent some time reviewing all the pieces and were very impressed with the number and quality of the entries. While choosing the winners, the judges were careful to consider which ones could include the Library logo, and which ones would translate the best into puzzle format. A huge thank-you to everyone who entered! All entries are on display in the Library as part of a Special Exhibit through the end of December. Winning entries are on display in the main foyer of the Library along with the other winners. Come and check out the exhibit!

Don’t miss our upcoming events: Dia de los Muertos crafts on Monday October 24th, Songs From the Stacks with Derek Dames Ohl on November 3, Tarot Journaling on November 6 and 13 and our 2nd annual Pie Contest on November 5! You can find information on these fun events on the Nederland Community Library website, www.nedlib.org.

Congratulations to the winners and to all the talented young artists who entered!
