National Newspaper Week

Posted

PEAK TO PEAK - Last week, I wrote about how important your local newspaper is in getting news to you about local governments and their effects on your life. This week—which just happens to be National Newspaper Week—I want to talk about the other ways in which this local newspaper enriches your life.

You probably already agree about this; after all, you are reading the paper right now. But why did you pick it up? Or better yet, subscribe to it?

Do you have kids in a local school? We cover school sports, presentations, graduations, individual student successes. Also the Gilpin School Board, sitting in on regular meetings to let you know what is going on at the administrative level. And right now, featuring the candidates for Board positions, to be voted on next month.

Do you have a local business, or work for one—or do business with one or more? That includes pretty much everyone in our coverage area. As well as the ads you see each week for local businesses, we frequently provide features on local businesses, letting you know who is doing what.

Do you love and attend local events? We’re pretty good at getting news about them to you before they happen, and writing articles about them to print afterward. There’s no way you could have missed all the coverage of recent art events, for example.

The same goes for sports. And lots more coming up as winter and ski season approach.

Our Mountain Folk Tales bring to the foreground stories of local individuals whom we should all want to know better.

If you're a music lover, this is the place to find out where and when music is happening in the area. (And there's a lot of it!)

We'll also let you know where you can find just the right meal or snack or beverage—from pizza or bagels to locally brewed beer or spirits. Sometimes along with the music you love. What could be better?

There are many local nonprofits and social organizations that add to our community, and you’ll find out about them here.

We take a regular look at what is going on Out There, where it affects what is happening here. (We figure you get your state and national news fix elsewhere. That’s not what we are about.)

I’ve really just touched the surface here. But I remember, when I first moved to Gilpin County, I immediately subscribed to both local papers so I could find out what living here would be like. And they did a darn good job of it, too.
