Being in the National Honor Society is not just about having a high grade point average. Being a member of the National Honor Society means you are committing to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Scholarship is referring to seeking out the best learning opportunities to grow on an educational path in and out of school settings. Service is helping in your community and having the desire to help others without a reward. Leadership and service often look similar. Leadership is being someone who takes action and responsibility for themselves. Lastly, character does not mean to have a “good’ character,” but to have empathetic and ethical decisions that affect yourself and others positively.
The new inductees from Gilpin School in both National Honor Society and Junior National Honor Society will exemplify these characteristics in school and outside of school when they are completing their service hours as well as in their day-to-day activities.
