The CBDs

The CBDs have been around as a band for nearly a decade. Some of the members of the current lineup were a part of a different band before the forming of The CBDs, but the current lineup has been around for over nine years. Burt Rashbaum serves as the key player and vocalist. Evan Cantor serves as the rhythm guitarist, harmonica player, and vocalist. Roland LaForge serves as the electric guitarist and vocalist. Alex Bulkacz plays percussion for the band.

Cantor describes the band as emulating a “Colorado sound” with acoustic guitars and multiple vocals running the mix. They mostly play 60s and 70s covers and their own original tunes during their shows. They have played reggae, jazz, pop, and classic rock tunes throughout the course of their career, and occasionally also throw out some disco in their shows.

Cantor says that for the band, the next step is to record, produce, and release an album of their original songs since they’ve never released an album before and people often praise their original songs. Before then, though, the band is going to put on a different kind of show than the ones they are used to putting on.

Greg Staab served as the band’s bass player for the entire nine-year run of the CBDs. Cantor describes him as “a joyful presence on stage,” always prepared and dedicated to the end. Unfortunately, Staab passed away recently after a long battle with cancer, leaving a huge hole in the band. On top of that, a supporter of the band and spouse of one of the members, community member Sharon Ferguson, passed away suddenly at the end of 2021.

To honor both of their memories, The CBDs are putting on a show at Kathmandu Restaurant. The gig will be played around the same time as Frozen Dead Guy Days, which is historically when the band has typically performed around Nederland (even though this year, they’re not part of the official festival). Cantor and the rest of the band hope that the show can provide a modicum of healing for those grieving for the loss of both Staab and Ferguson. Staab asked Bulkacz specifically to take over on bass when he could no longer play. The band will honor the memories of these two community members in the best way they know how – through the healing power of music.

The gig will be hosted at Kathmandu, 110 North Jefferson Street in Nederland, on Friday, March 18, 2022, at 7 p.m. This week’s music column is dedicated to the memories of Sharon Ferguson and Greg Staab.
