Call Me Ned

Call Me Ned is the kind of musical that could only be conceived by those that know the folklore of Nederland. When Patrice LeBlanc and her husband Ed Schoenradt moved to Central City in 2018, somebody suggested to them that they should write a musical about the beloved Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival. Having years of experience in writing musicals and songs together, they came up with the concept and wrote the script in five days.

The show was originally performed in March 2019 for the 2019 Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival. The performances for 2020 and 2021’s festivals (and the festivals as a whole) were canceled due to COVID-19. The show was able to perform in the Teller House Courtyard Gardens in the summer of 2020, but the show hasn’t been performed since. Now, for the 2022 festival, the show is coming back.

The story follows the much beloved Grandpa Bredo, the frozen dead guy himself, after someone forgets to lock his tuff shed and he is thawed out. He tries to explain to everyone around him that he is the real Grandpa Bredo, but since everyone around him is celebrating FDGD and is also dressed up as Grandpa Bredo, no one believes him. When someone finally notices the tuff shed is unlocked and Grandpa Bredo is gone, they believe him to be stolen and set out on a quest to find him.

The 45-minute musical features six songs and involves audience participation throughout. LeBlanc is beyond thrilled to be able to have community theater again, as COVID has prevented such theater from happening as often. The cast and crew adore the show as much as the writers do, and audience members often came back for a second showing because they thought it was so much fun. A song from the musical was even recorded for a radio station in Australia doing a feature on Grandpa Bredo.

It’s clear that Nederland’s love for Grandpa Bredo and the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival is just as strong now as it was before the pandemic, and this musical promises to capture that spirit.

Call Me Ned will be performed twice this year – once as a premiere performance in the Elks Lodge in Central City, 113 Main Street, on March 18, 2022, at 7 p.m., and once as a showing for the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival on March 19, 2022, at the Backdoor Theater in the Community Center in Nederland, 750 HIghway 72 North.
