Dan Williams is a self-proclaimed jazz, blues, and rock musician who has been playing music all of his life. He cites musicians such as Miles Davis, Vince Guaraldi, John Coltrane, and Michael Brecker as influences for his sound and inspirations for his music. Growing up, he listened to records from jazz artists such as Maynard Ferguson, Harry James, and John Coltrane and classical musicians such as Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Beethoven.
Williams loves to improvise. For over five years, he practiced improvising melodies over his saxophone as a parking attendant, and as a musician. He has a hard time playing the same parts over and over again. He rejected a gig from a cover band because he couldn’t imagine playing the same part three times a week consistently. He always likes adding his own spin on whatever he performs.
After starting a solar company in 2007 with his wife, Williams had to drift away from playing music by 2009 to focus on the business full time. A few years later, he picked the saxophone back up and started playing it again, then eventually started playing the piano again. After moving to Colorado in 2016, he decided to join a band again and knew that pursuing music would be a part of his life forever.
Williams estimates he has been a part of fifteen to eighteen bands throughout his lifetime. One of these bands, Picasso’s Thinking, won a best-unsigned band contest in the late 90s and performed an opening number for John Fogerty.
Williams is willing to do anything to pursue his passion for music, even traipsing his gear through six inches of snow at two in the morning after a nighttime gig. He loves seeing the reactions of a live crowd. He believes that if you love something enough, you’ll do whatever it takes to keep that passion in your life. For him, that passion is music.
