C.P. Meyer grew up in a very musical family. His parents sang in choirs growing up, and as a kid, he would go to church and sing hymns. He started piano lessons at a young age, but eventually, he drifted away from the piano as a whole. He also faded away from playing trumpet, which he started trying to play in middle school.
In high school, Meyer finally found his musical way. He joined a band during that time, and he also picked up a guitar after his older brother started playing it. Since then, he’s taken up other instruments such as the fiddle and the mandolin, although he didn’t play a ton of music during his college years in Denver.
About seven to eight years ago, Meyer helped found a folk-rock band called High St. Collective during his time in Denver. He remembers the guitarist putting out an ad on Craiglist looking for other musicians, and once they formed, they played around Denver for about five years. They switched out members every now and again and recorded a couple of albums along the way.
In 2018, inspired by the music community in Nederland, he and his wife decided to move back into the mountains and found their home in Nederland. He started playing around town in various open bluegrass jams once he moved to Nederland, meeting other musicians along the way.
He primarily plays a mix of bluegrass and blues music, and he cites various influences as leading him on that path. Among them are jazz musicians like Louis Armstrong and old-school fiddle musicians, and the songwriting style of John Prine, the finger-style of Nick Drake, and Bob Marley’s idea that music can be part of a revolution also heavily inspired his musical direction.
Meyer loves being able to convey emotion through music and watching the connection between a live performer and their audience, a kind of connection that doesn’t happen when you’re just playing by yourself. He is excited to reconnect with the musical community in the Peak to Peak area and play live again as performances start up again.
