Music of the Mountains: Where to be and what to see

KAMANI was born out of necessity, but as a band, it’s a gift that keeps on giving. When members of The Nth Power were unable to attend a Florida gig in November 2020, band member Nikki Glaspie called Nigel Hall, Kat Dyson, and Matt Lapham to create a new band to fill up the spot.

The line-up often changes, bringing in guests such as Robert “Sput” Searight & Shaun Martin of Snarky Puppy and Xavier Taplin of Ghost-Note. A band that unabashedly plays pure funk music, KAMANI states that their goal is to perform music safely during a time where live music has never been so important.

Kat Dyson remembers being touched by music from a young age. Growing up in Virginia, she attended piano lessons, which she felt were boring compared to hearing the other kids around her playing electric guitars.

She received a guitar as a present from her mom at the age of ten and started learning by ear. When her mother died suddenly after a brain aneurysm, Kat felt it was a sign that she should continue the instrument. Dyson has since played accompaniment with her guitar for musicians such as Cyndi Lauper and Prince.

As a band of friends, the members of KAMANI all have very similar musical influences. They all come from a background where music was part of their daily lives, where it was played constantly by friends and family members, and where it sound-tracked every part of their experience. To come together and bring live music to people is the most important part of their mission.

KAMANI’s biggest hope is that they are able to continue spreading the joy that live music brings to people, and that is why they’re the band that keeps on giving.

KAMANI will be playing live at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Drive in Nederland on Friday, December 17, 2021, with Electric Kif. Doors will open and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m.
