Megan (guitar, mandolin, and vocals) and Maddie Cody (guitar, clawhammer banjo, vocals, and primary songwriting) have been joined at the hip as siblings for their entire lives. They started playing guitar together when their dad introduced them to the instrument when Maddie was six and Megan was eight. Soon after, they performed their first show at a local coffee shop, and they’ve been playing ever since. Their dad used to play bass with them, but a few years ago, once they went to college, the duo met Will Pavilonis, a jazz bass major at Denver University. From there, The Cody Sisters as they are now were formed.
The biological sisters went to bluegrass festivals with their dad from a young age, while the oldest “soul sister” of the group, Will, focused primarily on jazz before joining and opening his ears more to bluegrass and folk. In middle school, once he started playing bass after originally playing cello, he focused mainly on classical music. He became interested in artists like Bill Evans, Gary Peacock, and Steve Swallow during high school, and became fascinated with improvisational music, which is why he finds that now, he loves bluegrass as well.
Maddie has been writing songs for as long as she can remember, and while the other two group members have written their own material, neither of them has found as much interest in playing those songs as they have Maddie’s. The biological duo originally performed traditional bluegrass covers before adding more of Maddie’s songs as they continued playing. While Megan and Will both credit Maddie’s songwriting with their success in originals, Maddie credits the other two with helping arrange the songs in a way that allows them to morph into the band’s sound.
Even though they’ve all played in other groups before, these three have dedicated the most time to The Cody Sisters. They love feeling like the experiences they share together (particularly Maddie’s through her songs) are being heard by the audience, and in particular, Megan loves when kids, nervous to talk because they’ve just been blown away by a show, come up afterwards to say hello.
They’re excited for their upcoming show at the Gold Hill Inn because they always love how energetic the audience is there. They hope that audiences are ultimately inspired somehow by the shows, taking away something that they’re inspired by in some way.
If you want to see The Cody Sisters performing live, be sure to check them out at the Gold Hill Inn, located at 401 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at 7 p.m. Also be sure to stream their EPs Strings and The Cody Sisters wherever you listen to music.
