In elementary school in southcentral Pennsylvania, Noah G. Fowler recalls having a small orchestra program. Kids would put their names in to be drawn for a certain instrument, and teachers would pick a name at random at the start of the school year. Luckily for Noah, he was the only student interested in playing the upright bass. He took lessons at his school and played in the orchestra. When he got into high school, he signed up for an in-school coffeehouse program to perform covers and originals. He started learning guitar, drums, piano, and pretty much every instrument he could get his hands on.
After being accepted with a scholarship into Berklee College of Music, Fowler first decided to attend a trade school in Canada, where he learned more about Irish and Prince Edward Island traditions of folk music and reintroduced himself to bluegrass music. Unfortunately, once he transferred to Berklee, his program was cut short because of the pandemic, so he moved back home to work and save some money before moving to Nashville.
He has pursued bluegrass and classic country music since moving to Nashville, and he focuses primarily on songs that tell a story, particularly historical stories.
Fowler says his biggest influence is John Prine, as well as Willie Nelson, and he has frequently delved into the history behind some of his favorite artists and styles to understand the context of where it came from. He loves being able to affect different people in different shows in a very unique way. Even though he plays the same music, everyone experiences and resonates with the show differently. He hopes that through telling his stories, his audience members can feel seen and experience a common feeling amongst themselves.
You can check out Noah G. Fowler’s latest single, “The Little Church with the Biggest Parking Lot,” which is available to stream everywhere. For more information about Noah and his upcoming performances and releases, be sure to head to his website at noahgfowler.com.
