Music of the Mountains Where to be and what to see

Posted

As a kid, Andy Eppler’s mother sang for their church, and music was always present in his house. He knew early on that he wouldn’t have a “normal” career trajectory like the other kids in school, so he chose to spend his life in the arts.

Inspired by artists like Stevie Wonder, Etta James, Waylon Jennings, and Bob Dylan—whose work he considers to be the epitome of American art—when he performs music, he focuses on performing a mix of outlaw country and R&B/ soul music. He’s been playing the same guitar for 20 years, and since he was about 14 or 15, he’s been recording his own songs.

Eppler sees creating art as “leaving the herd to find resources and then coming back to the herd with good news.” He loves exploring the dynamic of each crowd as he performs live, and he loves throwing out ideas he sees as good for the audience to follow and empathize with. He finds there are usually two different versions of live shows – ones where the audience sits quietly and absorbs everything happening on stage and ones where they have come out for a great night with their community and the musician is there to support that feeling. He hopes that the audience leaves with catchy tunes and interesting poetry in their head.

Eppler is a multidisciplinary artist by nature. He paints watercolor portraits, he’s an award-winning filmmaker, and he’s written three books (including his most recent, A Songwriter’s Grimoire). He also plays with liquid light, utilizing effects that look like lava lamps in his photoshoots, he has released multiple albums, and he produced a local television show called “Boulder County Tonight,” in which he interviewed county politicians, wrote his own comedy monologues, and even brought in a monkey puppet as a guest. While he has a collection at the Texas Tech University Archives, he ultimately hopes that what people remember about him is that he brought people together, made art for the community at large, and kept swinging and trying.

If you want to catch Andy Eppler performing live, check him out at the Jamestown Mercantile, 108 Main Street in Jamestown, on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at 7 p.m.
