Darren Newberg, guitarist and vocalist of the band Coyote Circle, started playing with a co-worker, Paul Hanson, the bassist, a few years ago, hoping to start a new group. Nahani Freeman, vocalist, joined this new group from a different band they had formed. After that, Dave Sechler, guitarist and vocalist, joined as well. To round out the group, Khristine Barr, drummer, as well as a former Gilpin School student, joined most recently and helped get this new group their first serious gigs.
Sechler was raised in a musical family, as his father played guitar and his grandmother sang in a church choir with her sisters, so he was raised with a lot of music. In particular, he was raised with 70s music like Neil Young, Dan Fogelberg, and John Denver. He picked up the guitar for the first time at around age 14, sticking with it over the years and playing with a wide variety of people.
Meanwhile, Newberg had a passion for entertainment and film in general, and his dad knew someone at a local venue who allowed them to meet some of the musicians backstage. His mom played a wide variety of music and always sang. When Newberg was about 16 years old, he started playing guitar, inspired by Marty McFly in “Back to the Future.” He performed with his friends in high school and college and kept playing with others as the years went on.
The band has done a lot of classic rock cover tunes, starting to branch out into different styles as they evolve as a group. They recently introduced their first original into a show, but mostly, they like playing feel-good tunes that people can sing along to. There’s something visceral about performing live for the band, something that keeps the adrenaline flowing, and there’s a certain communal aspect that the band members love as well.
They ultimately hope that the people who come to the show enjoy the music they play and are inspired to come back and see them play again. Playing as a band, the group loves the camaraderie that comes from that experience, and in the end, they feel that as a group, they’ve been able to bring the best out of each other musically.
You can see Coyote Circle performing live at JKQ BBQ, 200 Gregory Street in Black Hawk, on Friday, April 5, 2024, at 6 p.m. If you can’t make that show, you can also see them on Saturday, April 6, at 5 p.m.
