Rebecca Coronna found her stage name when she was about 19. She lived in Hawaii at the time, and she found the name Shakina and fell in love with it. At one point during a retreat in Hawaii, she introduced herself as Shakina Ma, and the name stuck.
She grew up in a family of musicians. Her mother was a singer, her father was a drummer, and her uncles played together in a band. Along with that, her grandfather played the mandolin and her aunts and uncles would sing together at the holidays. She would always go and see music with her family. She’s been singing for as long as she can remember, eventually joining choir and theater.
Ma remembers growing up with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell, focusing on soul music and songs that have an inspiring message to them. She finds that often, she’ll write songs for herself, allowing herself to self-reflect on the positive in times of hardship and help others in a similar situation. She primarily performs her original songs, although at times, particularly when performing with her mother, she’ll bring covers out for fun.
Ma loves the times when the words for a song pour through her, when the words and the music come at the same time, and when she’s able to find a song quickly. Sometimes, there are songs she has to work out with more effort, but she recognizes that if a song isn’t leaving her head, it’s usually worth committing to and finishing.
She loves connecting with her audience and encouraging them to sing along, and she loves seeing how audiences are touched by her music even if she feels she hasn’t done the best job in a show. She hopes that somehow, the audience will be able to connect to something she’s written, because she feels wherever one can find joy it is incredibly inspiring.
You can see Shakina Ma performing live at Busey Brews, 70 East First Street in Nederland, on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at 2 p.m.
