Pete and The Halbrooks Family Band formed recently. It started with a trio of Peter Herod, Em Halbrooks, and Kevin Halbrooks, with Jason Lowry eventually joining the group. Occasionally, the group will bring in a fifth or a sixth member as guest artists, but for the most part, the group consists of the three core members and Lowry. Herod says that bluegrass music was the most prevalent influence and inspiration for starting the group, as the instruments they play (banjo, upright bass, fiddle) lend themselves to bluegrass.
The band generally has a background in indie rock, punk, classical, and country music. Em Halbrooks has been playing violin since she was ten, inspired by her great-grandfather, whose personal German violin was passed down to her. She was trained in a classical background before eventually being introduced to fiddle camps, fiddle jams, and bluegrass jams and growing up on classic rock.
Herod started teaching himself guitar when his uncle left one in the basement of his house, learning to incorporate bluegrass into his playing style during his time in Tennessee. Eventually ending up in Colorado, he started collaborating with other musicians, relying on the artistry of those other musicians to help bring his songs to life.
Kevin Halbrooks was born and raised in Iowa, playing classical piano growing up before being introduced to bass and playing in his high school orchestra. He and Em Halbrooks met at a violin-making school in Minnesota, as they both have a background in violin repair and restoration, and they met Herod and Lowry when they moved to Colorado together.
Lowry has been playing banjo for years, along with fiddle and guitar. Em Halbrooks and Herod are the primary songwriters, and heartbreak has been a primary motivator for both of them during the writing process.
The group finds it incredibly therapeutic to perform these songs for a live audience, and they love it when people in the crowd can empathize and resonate with the lyrics of their material. They want people to experience the fun that the group brings with their music and hope that they are captivated by the show as a whole when they come and see it.
You can check out Pete and The Halbrooks Family Band at the Gold Hill General Store, 531 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Friday, March 8, 2024, starting at 7 p.m.
