Emmit Scully and Victoria Smith both grew up in the town of Nederland but didn’t technically grow up together. Scully went to Boulder High, and Smith went to Nederland Middle-Senior High, and even though their dads worked together, they didn’t know each other very well at first.
Their lives initially went in different directions, with Smith studying English, literature, and philosophy at CU Boulder and Scully studying at Front Range for two years. However, eventually, Scully had a dream about Smith and decided to track her down on Facebook. They reconnected and ultimately became a couple. They started playing together to mesh their artistic skills, with Smith focusing on singing and Scully playing guitar.
The Rollinsvillians (a Disneyvillain-esque name for Rollinsville citizens) were eventually given an amp by Doug Brightwood, which allowed them to perform additional backing tracks to sound more like a band than a duo.
They started performing together at various open mics, and recently, they performed at The Train Cars for Nederland’s Day of Art. This performance, in particular, has encouraged them to play out more, including at Busey Brews, another reconnection between Smith and Kyle Busey, who used to work together. For their day jobs, Scully works as a dealer in Black Hawk, and Smith works as a hairstylist.
Scully’s guitar playing is heavily influenced by blues music, with Stevie Ray Vaughn being a massive influence on his sound. The two also cite ZZ Top and Santana as important influences on their sound. While Smith grew up in an eclectic musical household (listening to everything from jazz to classical to comedy music), she says that blues is the heart of both of their musical tastes. The two primarily perform acoustic and electric covers of classic and alternative rock songs ranging from Jimmy Buffett to Foo Fighters, although they do have a couple of originals that they throw in every once in a while.
The two believe that getting out and performing is a great way to work on team-building in their relationship, and particularly at open mics, they love being able to perform with other people who are just as passionate about music as they are. They encourage audience members to have fun with the variety of music that they play, and they hope that they walk away having had a good time.
You can see The Rollinsvillians performing at Busey Brews, 70 East First Street in Nederland, on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at 2 p.m.
