Mike Lamitola has lived in Colorado for nearly twenty years now. He grew up in Connecticut, where he was inspired to be a musician primarily because his father was one. In third grade, he started learning piano and joined his school band playing clarinet in fifth grade. Around his eighth-grade year, he discovered The Beatles, and hearing his father play the riff for their song “Day Tripper” motivated him to play guitar.
Through high school and college, he became more interested in playing with bands, focusing on jam band covers during his early years in college. He also joined an acoustic group at one point, and towards the end of college, he joined a hip-hop/ funk band that lasted until he moved to Colorado. Throughout this time, he wrote and played his own music, which he says focused on folk/singer-songwriter styles.
He cites other bands such as Radiohead, Deathcab for Cutie, Wilco, and Pinback, as well as solo acts such as Nick Drake, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Tweedy as major influences. He doesn’t particularly focus on the genre when it comes to his personal performances, but he says that his music primarily leans toward Americana and folk with elements of flamenco and jazz sprinkled in. He loves it when the creative spark for songwriting comes out of nowhere, and he also loves performing covers from bands such as Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Smashing Pumpkins.
He loves playing in intimate spaces where the audience wants to hear the stories behind the songs he writes, and he hopes that audience members will connect to the honesty and humanity behind his music. His album, The Eighth Insight, came out in December 2022, and he is currently working on a new EP. He hopes he will have more opportunities to play in the Peak to Peak area, and he is excited to come back to the area.
You can check out Mike Lamitola performing live at the Jamestown Mercantile, 108 Main Street in Jamestown, on Sunday, February 18, 2024, starting at noon.
