While backpacking in Switzerland, Anthony Gonzalez had a crazy idea – he wanted to start a band. He decided to text a couple of friends to see if they would be on board with the idea, including his brother-in-law James Kidwell, his younger brother Jonathan Gonzalez, and his friend Jared Richey. Together, they agreed to move to Nederland and start a band.
Anthony has a background in classical piano and percussion, but he says the biggest influence for him when it comes to Small Kid Band is alternative rock. Richey has always been into alternative rock, Kidwell loves metal, and John brings hiphop and rap influences into the band. Together, they each bring their own dynamic to the band, creating a unique sound in the process.
Anthony loves that the band is able to build their own community and that they have been able to come together in a shared goal. Before the band, the guys worked constantly and felt stuck in their own lives, but with the band, they have been able to work towards new goals and find a new path in their lives. Anthony loves being able to share his personal stories through the lyrics he creates for the band, and he feels that when they perform, the emotions conveyed through their songs are palpable to the audience.
A big goal for the band right now is to be able to perform at Red Rocks, and when they perform, they want to be able to prove to their audience that their band contains something special. They are currently working on their project, demos for “Gas Station Run?” which will contain mainly original songs, and they are planning on creating an original video series cataloging their journey to Red Rocks.
You can check out Small Kid Band live at Very Nice Brewing Company, 20 East Lakeview Drive #112 in Nederland, on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 5 p.m.
