Adam Pause and Dave Solzberg are the closest of friends. Before their group NoGo Gilbillies was formed, the two of them and the other members of the group would gather together for NoGo Supper Clubs, where they alternated who would cook dinner and where. They realized from there that a lot of the group could play music, and they initially started playing for fun before performing at Salto once a week. They’ve been performing gigs locally for over fifteen years now.
There are various groups formed from this larger band. When members of the group can’t make it, they’ll split into the NoGo Threebillies, the NoGo Tribillies, and in the case of Pause and Solzberg, Two Billies. While the group as a whole primarily performs Americana and traditional bluegrass, Pause and Solzberg, in particular, have listened to everything from Bill Monroe to the band Slayer. Solzberg loves bringing other people’s music to life, especially collaborating with the other members of the Gilbillies to create exciting new material.
Solzberg started playing saxophone at the age of five, but eventually switched to guitar at twelve and to bass shortly after. He began playing professionally in Colorado in 1992, deciding to work for an undergraduate and master’s degree in bass performance at the Lamont School of Music in Denver. He then studied theory for two years at the University of Northern Colorado and earned his music education degree through Metro State in Denver.
He’s taught it all, from woodwinds to bass to brass to guitar, and he served as the musical director at New Vista High School for eighteen years. As a freelance bass player, Solzberg still plays in approximately fourteen different musical groups across the Peak to Peak area, including Quemando and 300 Days.
However, he says the end-all for him is being able to play with some of his closest friends. Being able to play with the Gilbillies and also play drums with his six-year-old son brings him an immense amount of joy. He ultimately hopes that the people who come to his shows can allow themselves to forget about their lives for a moment or go completely crazy to the music.
You can see Two Billies performing live at JKQ BBQ, 200 Gregory Street in Black Hawk, on Friday, January 26, 2024, at 6 p.m. and/or on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 5 p.m.
