Warren Ji considers himself more of a DJ than a musician. He played guitar in a punk band in middle and high school and wrote a few songs during that time. He has a SoundCloud where he has released original mixes, and he has experimented with various mixes of songs in Ableton. However, regarding sharing music with an audience, he primarily focuses on DJing.
During high school and college, Ji would throw parties, sometimes with other DJ friends of his, and from there, he developed a passion for the craft. Having grown up outside Madison, Wisconsin, he moved to Colorado in 2015 to start an extraction business, where he applies organic chemistry to plant extraction. He mostly DJs for fun, not as a career, but the hobby allows him to continue keeping up with music and sharing the music he enjoys with an audience.
Ji loves being able to mix different genres together during his performances, and he loves playing different genres to see what a crowd is particularly interested in. He loves getting the chance to challenge a crowd’s comfort with different styles of music during his sets, but he will often play to the room and prioritize the kinds of music that the crowd seems to like. He cites psychedelic, down-tempo bass, and deep house music as styles that he particularly likes and that have influenced his style of DJing.
Ji believes that if someone likes the music that they’re playing, the songs will sound better for those who are not as passionate about performing the songs. He loves being able to challenge his audience when it comes to the kind of music he plays, and he hopes that audience members will walk away with a sense of fun dancing to his mixes.
You can see Warren Ji performing live at Howlin Wind Brewery, 51 A Main Street in Rollinsville, on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at 11 p.m. after Steepland String Band at 7 p.m.
