Troy Yanel has been playing guitar since he was eight or nine years old. He started listening to records with his brother at a young age, and when he and his parents went to Chicago one year, he ended up buying a used guitar. He’s been playing ever since, studying classical guitar at Georgia College & State University before moving into music therapy. He ended up getting his undergraduate and master’s degrees at that college, and he’s always loved playing in bands.
He cites musicians such as John Prine, Jerry Garcia, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash as major influences on his music. He cites his primary styles right now as bluegrass and Americana music. He currently plays in the band Colorado Junction, which consists of himself, Dave Weisbart, Allison Langley, Aaron Pomerantz, and Paul Kiteck. Colorado Junction is named after the fact that the band members met on Craigslist from all different parts of the country. They want to be able to write songs that people can connect with. They also want to be able to respect each other’s private and personal lives by allowing each other to play whenever they feel like they can commit to a performance.
He loves connecting with people while performing live, winning over crowds by showing off his skills, and talking with audience members about songs that resonated with them. He compares the pool of talent in Colorado to that of towns like Nashville, and he loves being able to play in a town with such a musical history. He ultimately hopes that people who come to his shows have a good time coming to his show and can appreciate the rich musical background of Nederland as much as he does.
You can see Troy Yanel performing live at Busey Brews, located at 70 East 1st Street in Nederland, on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at 2 p.m.
