Drummer Christopher Morgan first met lead vocalist and guitarist Zea Stallings at an open house in Gypsy House in 2015. Stallings blew Morgan away with his ability, and soon after, they started hanging out more and writing songs together. At one point, Stallings needed a band for one of his gigs, so Morgan gathered himself, Elijah Jarosh on percussion, and Andy Babb on bass to help play with Stallings and the rest is history. The current members of the band are Morgan, Stallings, Cole Helman, Erique Johnson, and Nyki Flynn, the latter two of whom are rotating feature members.
Morgan’s father was a wedding band drummer, but Morgan originally played the guitar. Eventually, though, he got turned onto the drums and started a jam club on the CU Denver campus. Meanwhile, Stallings originally played the violin but started a rock band in his fifth-grade year once he started playing the bass guitar. He quit playing music for a period of time before starting guitar lessons in high school, after which he started playing with his friends and writing his own songs.
Stallings cites some of his influences as neo-funk musicians like Iron and Wine, The Luinneers, Fleet Foxes, and Head and the Heart as early influences. As he started developing as a musician, he cites Sam Cooke and Bob Marley as major influences. He feels that it is “a privilege to be in a space where people are there to see you perform” and that it’s a privilege to perform “whether or not they care that you’re there.”’
Stalling says that music is a very spiritual endeavor, and Morgan says that it is a very challenging and rewarding craft. Stallings hopes that audiences take away the sense that they can follow their dreams and that they have the ability to live the lives they want to live, while Morgan wants to provide a space where people can feel like they can be themselves. They hope that they can touch people with their music, and they hope that the audience experiences the same spirituality they do with music.
