Initially, Shawn Cunnane started out as a self-taught musician, going to school for English. At one point during his college career, however, he took a jazz improvisation class and his teacher was so impressed with his style that he convinced Cunnane to get involved in the music program. In the end, Cunnane would study jazz at Temple University in Philadelphia.
However, music has always been around Cunnane during his life. He was exposed to the kinds of music that his mother and grandmother loved to play, including Steely Dan, Van Morrison, Jim Croce, James Taylor, and Paul Simon. He was also inspired by groups such as The Beatles and The Grateful Dead. With all of these influences, he often describes himself as “somewhere between Pat Metheny and Paul Simon with a little bit of The Temptations going on.”
He occasionally plays with a band called Crick Wooder and another band called the Lunsfjord Cunnane, named after himself. When he plays solo, he usually plays either acoustic or electric guitar during performances and feels that his approaches to both instruments are unique to each other. He describes his style as containing a “soulful earthiness” regardless of whatever he tries to play.
He loves being able to invoke a positive response from an audience and feels like a natural high comes from that response. He wants to be able to build a connection with his audience where the more embarrassing and personal sides of his music can bridge a level of comfortability with the audience and with himself.
He wants the audience to experience joy whenever he performs live and tries to think about the ups and downs of his shows to create an emotional response from them. He loves being able to perform in Boulder County and is constantly performing, so there are plenty of chances to catch his unique style.
