Seeing Stars Band is not the first musical venture for many of the members of the celestially- titled band, nor is it the first time they’ve interacted with one another. Guitarists Doug Rutherford and Josh Brookstein played for the Riff Raff Family Band before the said band ended. They now serve as the “Bobby and Jerry” of Seeing Stars, as the band primarily focuses on Grateful Dead covers. Bassist John Heiland and drummer Larry Novissimo first played together in a band called Shanti Groove in the early 2000s.
Rutherford’s son, Hal, plays slide guitar for the band and is currently the youngest member (in his mid-20s). Andy Gaydos has played the steel pedal around Colorado for the last 20 years and met Heiland performing in other bands as well. Keyboardist Tom Warnke went to college with Novissimo and initially joined the band as a mandolin player before the other members realized he could play the keyboard, too. Occasionally, the band adds an eighth member, Brush Lish, to play saxophone, a member that Heiland describes as having brought the band together.
The band advertises itself as playing “a mix of Americana, Rock, and Cosmic Country music,” as the original Grateful Dead was what Heiland calls “a great curator of American music of all kinds,” highlighting Jerry Garcia in particular. Heiland says that it’s always been fun to play music together as a band, but there’s a different kind of energy that forms when other people see them perform. He finds the Nederland venues inspirational places to play, and the band is really excited to play more shows in the Front Range over the course of the summer.
If you want to see Seeing Stars Band perform live, you can catch them performing at the Jamestown Mercantile, 108 Main Street in Jamestown, on Friday, June 3, 2022, at 7 p.m.
