Music of the Mountains: Scott Dale

Posted

At a very young age, Scott Dale was first inspired by music when he saw The Beatles performing on The Ed Sullivan Show. He was inspired enough to want a guitar, which he received as a Christmas gift at around the age of ten. He learned how to play the guitar first from guitar lessons that didn’t particularly work for him, then from learning what chord diagrams were and teaching himself from there.

From the early 70s onward, Dale was taken by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young (particularly Neil Young). He was hyper aware of the West Coast country rock scene, which included bands like Buffalo Springfield, Eagles, The Grateful Dead, and many more. Dale learned to play their songs, and he says that his musical DNA is heavily influenced by this rock scene. He labels Americana and Americana rock as a better description of his style of music than country rock, as country rock has become more of a descriptor of commercialized Nashville country music.

Currently, Dale is in a band called Head West, which was a band that originated after the pandemic. He has performed with some of the members before, with bass player Ben Wilson having been a part of a previous project, Acoustic Ambush. Head West can perform with anywhere from two to five members of the band, depending on what the space accommodates, and they primarily perform as an Americana rock/ jam band, performing covers and improvisations.

Performing solo, however, Dale loves receiving the energy of the crowd responding to his music, and he tends to agree with the crowd. If they want to talk amongst each other and have background music, he can accommodate that crowd, and if they want to actively participate in listening to the story he has to tell through his songs, he can accommodate that crowd. Dale loves being able to connect with the audience regardless of what kind of crowd he gets, and he hopes that people have a good memory of the experience of the show.

Scott Dale will be performing at Busey Brews, 70 East 1st Street in Nederland, on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at 2 p.m.
