It’s February 2013. Sarah Banker had just graduated college in December of 2012 with a background in cultural anthropology and interpersonal communications. She had tried volunteering for many non-profit organizations, but she has always been interested in the performing arts, doing dance and theater at her performing arts high school and theater in college. She decides to take guitar lessons with her old theater teacher. On the first day of the lesson, he says that she is to perform live at one of his shows in three months’ time.
It’s three months later now. She performs at the show, and she is instantly hooked. She decides to keep practicing and starts busking, falling in love with the process of learning and playing guitar. At this time, she’s working in the private education sector, and she wants to move on. Her roommate tells her to do something about it, so she decides to go to Hawaii and figure out what direction she wants to go. She records her first track there and falls in love with the lifestyle, but has to travel back home to Arizona after her father passes away.
After a while, she realizes she can’t stay in Arizona and decides to travel to Portland, Oregon, where she meets her best friend and goes with her to every open mic possible. Her guitar teacher invites her to play at a festival in Utah, then to play guitar with him for a week. She starts getting more and more gigs in Utah, but eventually, she travels to Colorado to visit her friend, who had moved to the area. She ultimately decides to move to the area with her, and now frequents gigs in Nederland.
She finds herself inspired by the likes of Jack Johnson’s beautiful messages, the vocal depth of Billie Holiday and other jazz artists like her, and other local artists she sees across the circuit of her performances. She loves being able to share stories through her music and offering something of value to the community she plays for.
Sarah Banker will be playing with Emmit & Victoria at The Train Cars, 101 Peak to Peak Highway in Nederland, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 3 p.m. for Nederland’s Day of Art. Her music is available to stream everywhere, and you can find out more about her at sarahbankermusic.com.
