Ben Sproul has played in bands before, including groups such as Electric Toast and the Pine Dwellers, but recently, he started a brand new group known as Rocket Parade. Sproul has known bass player Otis Lande since he was about ten years old, as Lande used to play with Sproul’s older brothers during their high school years.
Later on, they started trying to play in other side projects together, which never necessarily went anywhere but allowed both of them to get more experience. Eventually, Sproul met Andrew Lunsford, a record producer, during Nederland jam sessions, eventually resulting in recording together. After meeting Matt Cottle, the band that is now known as Rocket Parade finally came together.
Sproul cites rock, soul, and funk music as major influences for everyone in the band, mentioning that Lunsford has had a lot of experience recording various rock and roll records. Sproul grew up with his older brothers in a rock band, and Lande’s dad as a jazz musician helped give him a jazz background as well. Sproul cites being surrounded by music at a young age as a prime inspiration for wanting to delve into music as a career later in life.
The band always strives to show an authentic side of themselves in their writing and be able to share that authenticity with a crowd. Seeing it move that crowd emotionally is, according to Sproul, the “greatest high on Earth.” He hopes that people have fun, enjoy the music, and allow themselves to get lost in the music during the shows and that being able to celebrate that music will encourage them to come back to other shows.
If you want to catch Rocket Parade performing live, be sure to check them out with Dreem Machine at The Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Drive in Nederland, on Saturday, September 10, 2022. Doors open with dinner at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.
