Grant Livingston moved to Nederland, Colorado, last year looking for a new band to join. He had heard about the music scene in the area and wanted to be a part of it. Through a friend of a friend, he met Jake Demarco, who had also been playing with friends Nate Tharp and Ben Maillaro. All three had come from the School of Rock in Denver, and Livingston joined them to create a new band, River Spell. Livingston is the acoustic guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, Maillaro is the electric guitarist, Demarco is the bassist, and Tharp is the drummer.
Influences that inspired River Spell include local bands from Nederland including Yonder Mountain String Band and Elephant Revival. Railroad Earth. Jimi Hendrix, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, and Robert Hunter are also big influences on the band’s sound, which is more folk-based music. They also play in an electric rock-and-roll context utilizing improvisation and sounds from jam bands such as The Grateful Dead and Phish.
Demarco took the bass very seriously as a kid, playing in his basement or his room whenever he could, but his mom was unaware of how seriously he was taking it until she learned that he had submitted himself and won an award for being the best young bassist in Colorado. All of the musicians have been involved with music from a very young age, and it is clearly a part of who they are as people.
Livingston loves the collaboration that comes out of the band format, and he loves that improvisation can allow for an exploration of different melodies and sounds. The band loves being able to play in Nederland and connect with the community through their music, as they allow the band to let loose and have fun. Livingston hopes that their live shows provide an open space for people to let go of their worries and have a good time, and they hope that pouring their hearts and souls into the music pays off for those who tune into their shows.
If you want to see River Spell perform live, be sure to catch them at Covered Wagon, 15 East 1st Street in Nederland, on Friday, August 26, 2022, at 9 p.m. Here are the listings of live music this week! Check it out and support your local musicians.
