Richard Shine grew up with a professional musician for a father. His dad was the band leader at a burlesque house, so Shine was around music a lot growing up. He received his first guitar when he was thirteen, and he played in garage bands in high school and at coffee shops in college.
During his college years, he also started teaching, along with writing, performing, and recording his own kids’ music under the name Mr. Shine, his classroom name. He would continue teaching and performing kids’ music for 25 years before retiring from teaching and moving to Arizona. He would perform in a band in Arizona and work on his adult music repertoire before moving back to Colorado and performing covers at bars and breweries in the mountains.
Shine mostly plays classic covers, but will occasionally throw in a cover of a contemporary song he likes or even one or two originals here and there. However, he personally prefers performing and watching covers to writing and performing his own original music or watching other people perform theirs. He occasionally performs with a friend of his, performing harmonies with him either for a whole show or a half show.
Shine loves stories about how songs were written, so he often shares these stories with his audience. He will share trivia about each of the songs he performs with the audience so that they can learn something and he can share stories that he finds fascinating. Shine primarily hopes that audiences can have fun at his show and want to come back for more after the show is done. He feels that as long as it was worthwhile for the audience to come to his show and watch him perform, it was worth his time to perform, too.
If you want to see Richard Shine performing live, you can catch him at Last Stand Tavern, on 32138 Highway 72 in Coal Creek Canyon, on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at 5 p.m.
